The Ford Edge

Looking at the Ford lineup it can be hard to keep track of everything they have to offer. They produce tons of sedans, compact vehicles, trucks, and SUVs, and it seems like they have a vehicle for every size and class of vehicle.

That’s where the Ford Edge fits in. It’s not quite as popular as their Escape or Explorer, but it fits in nicely between the two sizes. But where did the Edge come from, how has it changed through the years, and what else do you need to know? We’ll answer all those questions and more for you here.

That way if you’re considering getting a Ford Edge you know exactly what’s out there and what you’re looking at before you hand over any money.

A Brief History

While some vehicles have a long and storied history, that’s not the case with the Ford Edge. The first Ford Edge came out in 2006 with the 2007 model year. It’s a 5-door SUV that’s larger than the Ford Escape but not quite as large as the Ford Explorer.

This makes it a mid-size SUV that’s great for families or those looking for an SUV that can handle a little adventure.

The First Generation

Ford released their first-generation Edge in 2006 with the 2007 model year, which ran until 2015 when they decided to complete a significant facelift. The first-generation Edge came in four different trim levels through the years.

The SE is the base-model trim level, followed by the SEL, then the SEL Plus. In 2008 the SEL Plus became the Limited trim level, and in 2008 Ford also released a new trim level called the Sport.

Every Ford Edge comes with an automatic transmission, and there were three different engine options to choose from throughout the years with the first-generation Edge.

In 2010 Ford completed a facelift of the Edge, updating the front fascia, wheels, bumper, and various interior features. It was also in 2010 that Ford offered the 3.7L Duratec V6, an Ecoboost I4, and an updated version of their 3.5L Duratec V6 engine.

The Second Generation

In 2015 Ford completely revamped the Edge, releasing the second generation. With the second generation, Ford completely redesigned the front grille, headlights, taillights, increased the amount of interior space, and released new engine options along the way.

Ford also released the second-generation Edge in the European market, but in 2021 Ford went back to exclusively offering the Edge in the United States. However, while Ford offered the Edge in the overseas market from 2015 to 2021, they offered completely different engine options than you can find in the United States.

The second-generation Edge features many of the same trim levels as the first generation, starting with the SE as the base model. From there, there’s an SEL, an ST-Line, a Titanium, and an ST as you work your way up the various trim levels.

In 2019 Ford completed a facelift for the Edge. The newer Edge features an appearance less like the Taurus and more like the Explorer line, making it feel more like an SUV and less like a sedan.

Ford also swapped out the transmission for the 2019 and newer models, offering a 12-speaker B&O Play surround system instead of the previous Sony sound systems. Finally, Ford added three major safety technologies to the 2019 model. These features include post-collision automatic braking, evasive steering assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology.

Engine Options & Performance Specs

A big part of figuring out if a vehicle is right for you is getting a better understanding of what’s under the hood. And while the Ford Edge has technically only offered six different engine options in the United States, with multiple updates and refreshes, there’s more to the story than that.

If you want to know what you can find under the hood of a Ford Edge and what it can do, take a look at the chart below. There’s a big difference between an Edge that pushes 240 horsepower and one that pushes 335 but depending on the Edge you’re looking at it could have either a performance figure or something in between!

Ground Clearance

One area where the Ford Edge hasn’t changed an inch throughout the years is how high it sits off the ground. Whether you’re looking at a first-generation 2007 Ford Edge or one that just rolled off the assembly line in 2022, they all sit exactly 8 inches off the ground.

This means it sits 0.1 inches higher off the ground than the Explorer, giving it tons of versatility. And with an available AWD system, it certainly has the capability to take you off the beaten path a bit. It’s an outstanding combination of price, comfort, and versatility.

Cargo Space

While each Ford Edge sits the same height off the ground, if you get into different Ford Edges, you will feel a difference throughout. One of the primary reasons for this is that there’s a significant difference in the amount of space inside the Edge depending on the model year.

The first-generation Edge offered 32.1 cubic feet of storage space behind the second row and 69.6 cubic feet of storage space once you folded down the second row of seats.

However, the newest Edge offers 39.2 cubic feet of storage space behind the second row, and if you fold down the second row of seats you increase the storage space to 73.4 cubic feet. That’s a big difference from the original models, making a newer generation Ford Edge feel significantly larger when you’re inside.

Sales

While the Ford Edge has struggled a bit outside the US market, in the United States, the Edge has remained an extremely popular vehicle ever since Ford first fully released the line in 2007. With over 1.8 million Edges sold in the United States alone, there’s no shortage of options if you’re in the market for one.

Just keep in mind that while Ford has produced over 1.8 million Edges for the US market, with different generations and engine options out there, every Edge is far from the same.

Safety Ratings

No matter what Ford Edge you go with, one area where they really thrive is safety. While it doesn’t get perfect remarks from the NHTSA for the first-generation Edge, it does well in every category. Whether it’s rollover ratings, front impacts, rear impacts, or side collisions, the Ford Edge does great in tons of different categories.

Meanwhile, the second-generation Edge does even better, with top marks in every impact rating from the NHTSA and good to acceptable ratings in every aspect of the IIHS safety ratings.

When you add in all the innovative safety technologies in newer Edges, you’re getting a vehicle that does a great job of keeping you out of an accident in the first place.

The Future of the Edge

While the Ford Edge has done well for the brand, if you’re waiting around to see what else they have to roll out with it, you will end up disappointed. That’s because the 2023 Edge will be the last year Ford produces this vehicle.

But while Ford is cutting the production of the Edge after the 2023 model year, it’s not because of a lack of popularity in the United States. The Edge has continued to do well each year, and you can tie much of the recent drop in sales numbers due to supply chain issues, and even then Ford is pushing out a lot of these vehicles.

However, for better or for worse, Ford is transitioning to an all-electric vehicle lineup, and the Edge is one vehicle that’s not making the cut. We’ve yet to see what Ford plans to replace the Edge with, but if they are replacing the Edge in their vehicle lineup, you can expect an all-electric drivetrain to match the future vision of the company.
