History of the Ford Super Duty F-350

Ford started production of the F-Series Super Duty trucks in early 1998 for the 1999 model year. The line included the F-250, the F-350 with a chassis cab, and the F-450 and F-550 with chassis cabs. The line also included three Super Duty versions, including a two-door standard cab, a four-door crew cab, and a 2+2 door SuperCab. Rear-hinged doors were introduced as standard on the extended cab.

The Super Duty F-350 came with an eight-foot bed as standard, and that bed was optional for the extended cab models. The 350 also came standard with two-wheel drive, but you could get four-wheel drive as an option and you could add a dual rear-wheel axle for either drive train option.

The original Super Duty F-350 shared the 5.4-liter V8 engine and the 4R100 transmission with the Ford F-150, but the rest of its parts and design were new.

The first generation of the F-Series went through 2007, and it received an update in 2005, including both exterior and interior design changes. Some updates included a new grille, front bumper, locking tailgate, Triton gasoline engines, and larger alternators.

The second generation of the F-Series was only two years, from 2008 to 2010, and it featured a new 6.4-liter Power Stroke Diesel V8 engine that had piezo fuel injectors and sequential turbos to deliver better performance and fix some of the problems on the earlier engine. The Super Duty trucks got TorqShift automatic transmissions, and they came with a new Rapid Heat Supplemental Cab Heater to warm up the engine quickly in the winters.

A special edition Harley Davidson package was also available for the Super Duty F-350 in 2008, which included a unique design, 20-inch wheels, leather trim, and more.

The third generation of the F-Series ran from 2011 to 2016, and the Super Duty F-350 received big exterior updates, including a bigger front fascia, thick-gauge steel frames, and more. The F-350 also got a bigger engine and had more towing capacity. It was so powerful that it was sold as a commercial vehicle in Venezuela. Engine options included a 6.2-liter SOHC V8 or a 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8.

The most current generation is the fourth generation, which was introduced in 2017 and is still running. The Super Duty line was all new with the fourth generation introduction, including a new frame made of military grade aluminum alloy.

The Ford F-250 vs. the Ford F-350

Ford had produced a long line of F-250 and F-350 models, so they vary in different ways, depending on the model years you compare. Some will have different design components, and others will perform differently.

Generally speaking, the Ford Super Duty F-350 differs from the F-250 primarily in terms of its towing capacity. The F-350 usually has the ability to carry heavier loads, which makes it ideal for commercial use or for hobbyists who need to carry excessive loads. The Super Duty F-350 is designed to take on big jobs and to give you the performance you need on just about any terrain. It’s the toughest of the tough.

Currently, the max towing capacity you can get on a Super Duty Ford F-350 is 32,000 pounds, depending on the year and configuration you choose. Meanwhile, the max towing capacity on an F-250 is 18,500 pounds.

Ford F-350 EndgineUnder the Hood

The Ford Super Duty F-350 trucks have always come with powerful engines. These trucks are designed to take on any terrain, including conditions that would get other vehicles stuck, such as mud and snow. You can drive a Super Duty F-350 up a rocky hill and have little problem, if any.

The F-350 has typically had the most powerful engine in the Ford F-Series lineup, only sometimes falling behind the Ford F-450. Both gas and diesel options have been made available, so buyers have had options to determine which engine would give them the type of performance they need. With this choice, buyers are also able to balance what they need with power with what they want to spend on gas and maintenance.

The most powerful Ford Super Duty F-350 truck engine available to date is the 6.2-liter 16-valve V8 engine that puts out 385 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque. If you need more torque for your operations, the better choice to date would be the 6.8-liter 30-valve V10 that puts out 362 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque.

Exterior Features

The Ford Super Duty F-350 has always been a brawny truck, even in its earliest stages. The very first model had a wide front fascia and sat high off the ground, creating an imposing look that showed that it meant business. Not much has changed in the forthcoming decades of production.

Whatever Ford Super Duty F-350 model you are looking at, you can expect to see a wide and tall geometric grill, large head lights, and an angular, muscular body. Wheel sizes have changed by a few inches by year and configuration, but the F-350 wheels have always been on the larger side for better performance.

The F-350 focuses more on practicality, which makes it ideal for a working truck. Yet it isn’t a boring truck. You’ll see enough glitz, like chrome trim, and enough detailing to make it attractive and interesting.

Ford F-350 InteriorInterior Features

Inside the Ford Super Duty F-350, you’ll find a lot of materials made for easy cleaning, such as vinyl and plastic. But these materials don’t look cheap. This is still an attractive truck. Ford doesn’t believe you have to sacrifice style for functionality.

In some F-350 models, you can get higher-quality materials like leather, depending on the configuration or package you choose.

Newer models tend to have more convenience features, such as a large, display screen for the infotainment system, storage units throughout the cabin, steering wheel-mounted controls, and more. By purchasing a used Ford Super Duty F-350, you can get access to advanced features that a previous owner would have had to add with a package. You’ll get those features without having to wait for them to be added and without having to pay a lot more.

Safety Features

Much of the safety of the Ford Super Duty F-350 is in its construction. Various models have been made with double-gauge steel frames and with military-grade aluminum frames. These materials are as tough as they come, and they keep passengers safe in case of an accident. Features like anti-lock brakes and traction and stability control also give you greater control behind the wheel.

The F-350 has also come equipped with a range of airbags over the years. The number of airbags has continued to increase over the years.

As with many other models, the available technology has also made more safety features available on more recent models of the Ford F-350. Some options include a backup camera, controls mounted where they are easier to reach, and emergency communication options. You can get the most safety features by shopping for used models that would have been stocked with additional packages, and you can get a much better price on those models than you would have new.
