There are a number of things that every driver on the road should know how to do. In the last article, we learned about the different parts of the clutch system and how they work in unison to make the clutch work. In this article, we will see how the clutch actually works. What happens is, when the clutch pedal is depressed, a release bearing gets pushed against the diaphragm spring, relieving pressure on the flywheel. This pressure is exerted by the driven plate. The driven plate is placed on a splinted shaft between the flywheel and pressure plate. This interrupts the transmission of power from the engine to the wheel, allowing you to change the gears. When you pull your foot back from the clutch pedal, the release bearing is withdrawn. As a result, the diaphragm spring increases pressure on the pressure plate, which in turn pushes against the flywheel. Some trucks have a hydraulically operated clutch system. In this system, when you push the clutch pedal, it pushes a piston in a cylinder. The pressure generated by the piston is transmitted to a slave cylinder, located on the clutch housing. The slave cylinder then transmits this pressure to a clutch release arm. As you can see, there are many parts in a clutch system and each part is essential to the proper working of the clutch. In the last article, we saw the role played by a clutch in a vehicle. In this article, we will see what the mains parts are in a clutch and what role each part plays. The clutch system is made up of many parts. But there are five major components. They are: flywheel, pressure plate, friction disc, throw out bearing and release system. The flywheel is directly connected to the crankshaft and it spins when the engine moves. The pressure plate is in turn connected to the flywheel. The pressure plate is spring loaded and it performs two roles. It maintains the unity of the clutch assembly and it releases tension, allowing the clutch assembly to move freely. The friction disc or clutch disc is located between the pressure plate and the flywheel. The clutch disc contains friction surfaces on both sides, allowing it to build or break contact with the flywheel or pressure plate, allowing smooth operation of these parts. The throw out bearing and the release system operate in unison. So who do these different systems work? What happens is, when the truck is moving, the clutch is engaged and everything moves as one unit. But when you push the clutch pedal, the clutch assembly gets disengaged. How do you let your truck know that you want to change gears? You push the clutch of course.
