You might be surprised to learn that most teen car crashes are not due to insufficient skills or knowledge. It’s usually because of a lack of maturity or an attitude problem. Here are some tips from Tim’s Truck Capital and Auto Sales that can help you prepare your teen driver so they are less likely to experience an automobile accident. You are their best role model. If you want them to be a safe driver, you need to be a safe driver. That means you need to obey speed limits and demonstrate good driving habits every time you drive with them. Play an active role in your teen’s practice driving. For the first six months they drive, make sure you are with them. Have them drive in a wide variety of driving conditions so they can build experience and confidence. Don’t let them drive with teen passengers for the first few months. Teens are easily distracted, especially by other teens. Make sure they have developed solid driving skills before you allow them to drive their friends around. Make sure they wear their seat belt 100% of the time. Make sure you do, as well. Talk to them about drugs and alcohol use. It’s wise not to let your teen drive at night for the first few months, then gradually have them do it. You want them to be a confident driver before they start driving at night. Keep it safe and slow at first. Let your teen be comfortable driving in slower speed zones before you take them out on fast-moving, high volume traffic roads. You can gradually introduce them to more challenging driving situations like highway driving, major urban area and merge ramps. Make sure they learn how to drive in inclement weather. Ride with them as they learn how to navigate wet, icy or snowy roads. Limit their cell phone usage in the car. Make sure they know they should never text and drive or even talk and drive. If they need to use the phone, teach them to pull over and then talk. Choose a really safe vehicle for them to drive. You want to be sure the vehicle has high safety ratings and equipment like crumple zones and airbags. Even a well lit lot can conceal defects.?Check each opening and body panel joint to see how it fits. Run your hand along the bottom of the doors and check for rusty, hard edges.?If there are raised spots on the roof, there’s probably rust underneath.?Examine each tire for signs of leakage or tread wear.?Look at the coolant fluid. It should be greenish in color. If the fluid has rust in it, chances are the engine will overheat.?Examine the air filter and engine and see if there is excessive dirt. If you see a large amount of oil or grease deposited on the engine, it’s hasn’t been well cared for.?Start the engine and listen. If it knocks or thuds, it could have a bad crankshaft. If the idle doesn’t seem right, have it checked by a mechanic.?Ask for a CarFax report to see if it’s been in a major accident. At Tim’s Truck Capital, our service experts get this question a lot: “Which oil should I use for my truck?” It’s a good question, especially since now you can choose synthetic oil, traditional motor oil or a blend. We thought we’d share some insights and information with you so you can make an informed decision. Synthetic oil is great when it comes to both form and function. It lasts longer and can handle extreme temperatures much better than conventional oil. Because it can last up to three times longer than conventional oil, it’s less harmful to the environment because you’re dumping 15-24 quarts of oil less each year. Synthetic oil is more expensive, but because you have to change the oil less, it averages out with conventional oil. With conventional oil, you have to do an oil change every 3,000 miles or three months. With today’s synthetics, you can go up to 10,000-15,000 miles or six months! Synthetics run cleaner and produce less resistance in your engine. You’ll get added horsepower and overall engine efficiency. Most vehicle manufacturers will recommend which type of oil to use.
