Know what the Winter Weather Advisory designations actually mean. Winter weather advisories mean that conditions that could be hazardous, but not life threatening if you use caution. Winter storm watches are for severe winter conditions that may affect your area, issued 12-36 hours before major storms. Winter storm warnings means you can expect a storm with 4+ inches of snow/sleet in the next 12 hours or 6+ inches in 24 hours. Blizzard warnings mean you can expect snow and strong winds with blinding snow, deep drifts and a life-threatening wind chill.
2. Be sure to tell a friend or family member what your travel plans are, including routes and timetables. Sometimes cell phone coverage is spotty or non-existent. You want someone to be able to find you if you break down, especially in rural areas.
3. Pack a cold weather driving kit with jumper cables, blankets, kitty litter, cell phone charger, flashlight, flares, water and high calorie non-perishable food.
4. Never let your gas tank get less than half full to prevent the fuel line from freezing.
5. Keep extra wiper fluid in your trunk.
6. Pack a first aid kit.
7. Don’t drive if you start to feel drowsy. Instead, pull over to the side of the road or check into a motel.
8. Make sure your headlights and tail lights are in good working order.

If your pickup truck is a few years old and has a drop-in bedliner, you might think your truck bed is protected from the outside elements. But you just might be wrong. If your bedliner has been in place for more than two years, you should inspect it immediately. A drop-in bedliner is hard plastic that sits on top of your truck bed. However, it’s not equipped to prevent debris from getting underneath it. That’s why you should inspect it periodically and make sure that it’s in good shape.

For example, the drop-in bedliner itself can scratch your pickup bed. It’s constantly shifting and can rub against factory paint and even wear it off. There are truck bedliners that don’t skid and slide around and can prevent scratches and chipped paint.

So you’re driving down the highway, minding your own business and suddenly…bam! Something solid hits your windshield. It could be a pebble, bit of debris kicked up by that truck in front of you or a rock, but there it is…a chip or even a crack.

A windshield is one of the most important parts of your truck, designed to ensure your safety while you’re driving. So what do you do when you get a chip or crack in it? The service experts at Tim’s Truck Capital and Auto Sales in Epsom NH have prepared this information for you.

If you don’t repair a small chip in your windshield, it can quickly create a crack and then you’ll have to replace the entire windshield. If you repair the chip, you get to keep the original factory seal on your windshield, which is a good thing. As mentioned, the cost of repairing a chip is far less than the cost of replacing an entire windshield. The cost of chip repair varies from shop to shop, but as a rule, it’s about $50. Looking for a unique way to spend a few hours this weekend? Here’s a doozy for you. Just head 85 miles up the road to Westbrook, Maine where you’ll find The Axe Pit at The Maine Warrior Gym, the first axe-throwing range in New England.

Axe throwing?

Who knew it’s now a big thing. It’s been popular in Canada for a decade and is making its way to facilities in the U.S. Our service techs were fascinated by this idea and wanted to learn more about it.

Maine Warrior Gym co-founder Tim Johnson said he discovered the sport of a trip to Montreal. “It’s like throwing darts or shooting archery, just edgier,” he said. “People are a little afraid of throwing an axe, but it’s much easier than you would expect.”

You can compete in a group or get one-on-one instruction from one of the “axe-perts.” It’s a great sport for friends, co-worker, dates, birthday parties, corporate team building and more. It’s as safe and easy as throwing darts, but a lot more satisfying. Bring a group of up to six people, 18+ years of age. Of course, you have to wear closed toe shoes, and you must make your reservations online. The cost is only $20 for an hour. Well, 2018 has come in with an icy roar, right? And maybe you’re thinking that buying a solid used pickup truck is a good idea. To that end, the experts at Tim’s Truck Capital and Auto Sales in Epsom NH thought it would be a great idea to look at a very good year for pickup trucks—2008! Yes, these beauties came off the assembly line a decade ago, but still have a lot of life left in them. Here are a few of our favorite half-ton pickup trucks.

Our top four choices do not come as a surprise to anyone familiar with pickup trucks. The F-150, Sierra, Silverado and Ram have been mainstays on the pickup truck market for decades. In fact, any of these four trucks would serve as a great work truck.

On top is the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500. It’s available with three engines—the 195-hp 4.3L V6, the 295-hp 4.8L V8 and GM’s gas/ethanol 5.3L V8 producing 315-hp. These engines deliver 260, 305, and 338 ft.-lb. of torque, respectively. Most of the Sierra trucks will be equipped with at least the 4.8L engine. The maximum towing capacity for the 2008 GMC Sierra comes in at 8,200 pounds.

Coming in second is the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. It lets you do all the stuff you want a half ton pickup to do—and it’s comfortable and upscale to boot. You get a rugged frame, great handling, stability control and side curtain airbags, too. You can choose from three body styles: standard cab, extended cab and crew cab. There are also four engines from which to choose and a four speed automatic transmission with a tow/haul mode is standard.

In third place is the Ford F-150. It delivers smooth handling and a comfortable cab. You’ll find it with three different engines: a 4.2-liter V6, a 4.6-liter V8 or a 5.4-liter V8 and you can choose from three different bed lengths: 5.5, 6.5 or eight feet. There are six different trim levels: XL, STX, XLT, FX2/FX4, Lariat and King Ranch.

And finally, in fourth place is the 2008 Dodge Ram 1500, the king of big-truck attitude. It can easily handle the diverse duties of a comfortable daily driver and it’s a capable work horse, as well. It’s 4.7-liter V8 delivers a robust 310 hp and 330 lb-ft. There are three body styles: regular cab, Quad Cab (a crew cab) and Mega Cab (jumbo crew cab).
