If you’ve never owned a pickup truck before don’t just go out and buy a  used one without making sure it has a few essential features and equipment that’ll make driving your new pickup easier and more convenient. When it comes to trucks, it’s not about the make or model but about the equipment.

Make sure that the used truck you’re looking at comes with appropriately sized mirrors. Today’s trucks come with what they call trailering mirrors that extend the visibility of the driver onto either side for better peripheral vision. Some trucks come with even larger mirrors to improve sight lines while towing things. If you’re buying a truck for the first time but don’t plan on doing any towing or heavy duty work it is still highly suggested that you buy a truck with extendable mirrors to avoid backing up into obstacles that may present themselves unexpectedly. When you’re sitting in a monstrosity of a truck it can be difficult to see what’s going on in the outside world, particularly if you are towing something behind you.

Off-road accessories are another must have in your new pickup truck. Some of these include underbody protection and tow hooks in case you ever plan on taking your truck off the pavement. Also, you won’t have to spend much on these items as they’re not very expensive for the modern pickup truck. Make sure you have some off-road accessories installed in your brand new truck before your friends start making plans to head out onto the trails.

If you have a camping trip, road trip or any other major outdoor activity coming up soon, think about treating yourself to a durable and sturdy  used pickup truck from Tim’s Truck Capital.

Toyota, the Japanese automotive manufacturer is known for producing reliable, long lasting vehicles that are able to serve their purpose for long periods of ownership. Toyota trucks are no exception to this rule, which is why the long-running Toyota Tacoma nameplate continues to be a favorite amongst mid-sized truck buyers.

Apart from sedans, hatchbacks, and SUV’s, Toyota is also known for its high quality and highly durable and reliable trucks. Toyota’s trucks are manufactured by some of the best and most knowledgeable and experienced engineers available in the automobile market today. In fact, Toyota is known to have bought off some of the world’s top engineers from its other competitors in the automobile market.

Toyota’s trucks are mechanically very easy to operate and very well engineered. They don’t use a lot of expensive materials, components and parts but focus on getting the basics right. They have tie ups with not just one supplier for spare parts and truck components but have tie-ups with a number of suppliers and then take their bids accordingly. The winning bid is usually the lowest bid. Toyota picks the supplier of their choice before their truck component is actually finalized. This leads to spending less money on high-quality components so Toyota is keeping their cost of manufacture or production low without compromising on product efficiency and reliability.

Toyota tests their engines regularly and does periodic quality and control checks on their trucks. The engines are not complicated maintains their super high engineering standards which are why you won’t face problems like your truck breaking down on the side of the road.

There is a notion amongst car owners that newer vehicles are not built as well as ones from the past. While there are arguments that both encourage and dispel this belief, the fact remains that there are many older vehicles that were built exceptionally well. Buying one of these vehicles can be a cost effective way to ensure that you are getting a great vehicle that will last long with minimal repair costs.

Some cars that were found to run perfectly even after long crossing their predicted life span include the Isuzu Rodeo SUV, Honda Civic compact sedan and coupe, Toyota Land Cruiser SUV, Ford F-150 pickup truck and Jeep Grand Cherokee. These models have been tested by consumers and have proven their ability to remain well running far beyond expectation. Many of these vehicles have been praised by AutoTrader.com and Forbes as great options.

Modern vehicles are also built to last and perform well even beyond 250,000 miles with proper care and routine services and check-ups. Because these vehicles have been around for many years, older models frequently have simple mechanics and are simple to work on from home.

If you want to buy a used vehicle that will last you for a number of years, head down to Tim’s Truck Capital and book a test drive today. If you have an older vehicle that needs servicing, Tim’s Truck Capital can help with that as well!

Car tire driving on snowy road.

Recently, the Norwegian authorities decreed all trucks and motor vehicles that weigh 3500 kg or more should wear winter tires. They wouldn’t have made this official declaration without substantial reasons.

Winter tires are essential for motor vehicles during the season in many parts of the world, but are winter tires really necessary? Why do you need to put winter tires on your truck?

Many people assume that all-season tires are enough if you drive all year round. But that applies only in temperate climates. If you live in an area where it snows, you should get winter tires for your used truck or other vehicle. And there is good reason too.

During winter, the road freezes up and there is a high risk of your vehicle skidding or toppling over. On the opposite end, winter tires can dramatically increase your safety on the road. Winter tires work by increasing the tire’s traction on the road.

Winter tires are equipped with improved tread patterns compared to the average tire. There is another reason why they are different. They use ‘softer’ rubber compounds to enhance the tire’s grip on the road. Winter tires work best in icy and snowed out conditions but they are also useful in cold weather.

Braking performance is another reason why many people switch to winter tires in cold weather. According to a test, winter tires can improve braking performance by up to 35% in cold weather, compared to normal tires.

We understand that winter tires are expensive and that is why many people don’t want to switch to winter tires. By using normal tires, you are putting yourself at an enhanced risk for accidents.

God forbid, you get into an accident; you will end up losing more money than you would have spent on winter tires. Tim’s Truck Capital recommends you to change your used truck’s tires to winter tires come winter. To buy  used trucks, contact  Tim’s Truck Capital today.

Checking car tire pressure with gauge.

Truckers often ask whether they should inflate their tires to the maximum PSI limit for the tire. The answer is, when it comes to tire pressure, maximum pressure is not always the right choice.

When you went to fill air into your tires, you may have noticed the maximum PSI for front and rear tires. The PSI is nothing but the maximum cold pressure that your tires need to carry maximum load. Cold pressure means you are filling air into the tires in ideal conditions- when the tires are cold.

If you fill the tire with the maximum amount of air it can safely take, you may see superior cornering performance. But there is a risk you may go over the braking threshold. Braking threshold is the maximum braking pressure at which the back tire begins to slip.

There is another risk if you fill too much air into the tires- the tires wearing out. When you fill the tires to the maximum PSI, the edges of the tire round off and the center begins to feel more pressure, causing it to wear out faster. The traction in the tires reduces.

So how much tire pressure is enough? Look at the tire manufacturer’s specifications. They usually mention the optimum PSI level for their tires. Please note maintaining less than optimum PSI in the tires will decrease the fuel efficiency of your truck. If you buy your used truck from Tim’s Truck Capital, they will help you take care of the tires of your truck.

Riding in a car on a sunny drive.

There is confusion about what kind of tires are better for summer- all season tires or summer tires. To say the truth, there is no single answer. It will depend on your personal preferences, budget, driving conditions (weather) and the vehicle. It is a good idea to know the benefits and limitations of each type of tire before you go out and buy one.

When to choose all season tires?

If you are looking for acceptable performance in all types of weather, then go for all season tires. All season tires have moderate treads. The rubber compound in an all season tire is engineered for long tread life compared to summer tires that have relatively shallow treads.

Where all season tires fall short is grip. If you continue with all season tires, you will have to sacrifice braking, cornering and steering.

When to choose summer tires?

If you have a high performance vehicle that is fast and agile, you are better off with summer tires. These tires are more responsive, have more braking and cornering capabilities. This improved performance can be attributed to the special tread pattern.

In a summer tire, more rubber touches the road seeing how they are designed to maximize road grip. At the same time, they have fewer grooves than all season tires which have them to cope with cold weather.

We understand this is a difficult decision. Everyone wants their used truck’s tires to last long. But at the same time, no one wants to sacrifice performance. If you are in this predicament, let  Tim’s Truck Capital help you.

Car key being handed over.

A pickup usually comes in handy when you are shifting home or you want to move a lot of merchandise from one place to another. Owning a cheap pickup has its own advantages.

Need for Truck

There are times when you just need a pickup. Having a cheap pickup in your garage will definitely come in handy in many situations. If you are shifting houses, you will be able to transport all your stuff yourself without having to shell out extra for the moving services. If you are into business, you will be able to transport merchandise from one place to another safely, and at your own pace. You can carry anything in a pickup, without having to worry about the upholstery or any spillage.

Fun to drive

Pickups can be fun to drive, especially if you are into that old feel of manual shifting. A lot of people, especially the older generation, prefer pickups than any other new generation vehicles out there. For them, a pickup/truck is all about character. Think about it. You want Logan/Wolverine to drive a Ferrari or a pickup? A pickup definitely goes hand-in-hand with his rough character.

A source of income

You can make money by hauling other people’s stuff. During the winter season, you can put a plow on it and clear parking lots and driveways. You can rent it out for people who want to use it occasionally.

Owning a Truck can be Cheaper in the Long Run

A few of the trucks available on the market today are cheaper to own than some of the smaller, compact cars. Even if they have a lower fuel economy rating, in terms of the overall costs incurred, they are frequently cheaper. According to a report by Edmunds.com, owning a 2011 Honda Ridgeline, a large, light-duty truck, costs only about $49,782, compared to owning an Audi A5 with a cost of $58,523 to own or the 2011 Ford Taurus SHO with a cost of $56,546 to own. Also, take into consideration the fact that the Honda Ridgeline gets a combined 17 mpg whereas the Audi A5 gets 25 mpg and the Ford Taurus SHO, 20 mpg. (The mpg ratings are according to fueleconomy.gov).

Edmunds took into consideration the taxes, account depreciation, insurance, financing interest, fees, repairs, maintenance, fuel costs, and the available tax credits (federal) while calculating the total cost to own each of the above vehicles. Edmunds also assumed a 15000 miles-driven-per-year cap during the calculation of the costs. According to Danny Zhou, Edmunds’s data expert, free maintenance plans offered by many of the vehicle manufacturing companies has the potential to save thousands of dollars for the car owners over a period of 5 years.

The report from Edmunds.com also points out that owning a Hybrid car is comparatively cheaper than owning a gas-powered car. For instance, it costs only $34,479 to own a Civic Hybrid whereas owning an Accord will cost you $39,225.

GM's Vortec Engine.

The Vortec line of engines, I4, I5, I6, V6, and three V8 versions, were introduced by General Motors in the mid-90s. When you speak about Vortec engines, mainly it is about the 5.0L/5.7L engines based on the original 1955 Small-Block Chevy V8. The redesigned cylinder heads of a Vortec engine provides for improved combustion efficiency. The intake ports (reshaped) of the engine provides for better cylinder filling and fuel atomization by promoting higher air flow velocities to the combustion chambers via the ports. The redesigned chambers create a vortex-like flow of the fuel/air mixture within the cylinder. It helps to keep the fuel evenly combined. It is then distributed through the hole of the combustion chamber. Upon ignition, the faster and thorough burn result in the production of more heat, which in turn means more cylinder pressure. More cylinder pressure means more pressure on the piston. Increased pressure on the piston in general means increased power.

Vortec cylinder heads (generation I) can be used to upgrade older SBC engines. In fact, it is a popular upgrade with automobile enthusiasts and custom car designers. However, there are certain points to keep in mind:

  • Vortec heads of the LS-series will not fit on a classic SBC-style engine
  • The Vortec heads will improve low/mid rpm operation, however, they are not suitable for high rpm operation (above 4000 rpm)

You will be able to pick up generation I-style Vortec heads for a fair price. They have been in production from 1996 till 2002, which means there are a lot of them out there. They are easy to install on older generation I SBC V8.

Meaning of Hammering Sounds from Your Truck.

If you hearing rattling or hammering sounds from your used truck’s engine, get it looked at immediately. There are several issues that can cause a truck engine to make hammering or knocking sounds.

Generally, engine knocking be traced to an abnormal ignition. What happens is, when you turn the keys, the carburetor mixes fuel and air in a pre-decided ratio and pushes it into the combustion chamber.

Occasionally, the mixture ignites on its own, on multiple fronts, before the piston fires (because of engine heat or engine pressure), producing the clattering sound that we call knocking. The most severe problem is detonation and it will literally break the pistons.

Engine knocking can also occur if you use the wrong type of fuel for your vehicle. Some vehicles require high octane fuel, disregarding such recommendations can wreak havoc on your engine and your vehicle’s overall health.

The sounds can be created because of malfunction at the spark point as well. In this case, the issue can be solved by replacing the spark plug.

Sometimes, you can hear the engine knock when you start the truck on a higher gear or if you slow the truck down without changing gears. However, these are not issues that you necessarily have to worry about. To solve this particular problem, you just have to change the way you drive.

Engine knocking or hammering is a cause for alarm. Always ensure the truck is on the first gear when you start it. Second, remove gears when you slow down. If you have any questions, please get in touch with Tim’s Truck Capital.
