Truck engine losing horsepower over time

When buying a car you thoroughly check its specifications and confirm that it is the vehicle of your dreams. Many discussions and inquiries later you finally make the purchase. A few drives or years down the line you notice the automobile isn’t working as its old self. There is a significant loss of horsepower. But is that even possible? Can a truck lose its horsepower over time? The answer is, yes. Take a look at how and why it happens.

One of the most common causes of loss in horsepower is wear and tear of the engine. No matter how lovingly you care for your car its engine will wear out after some time, reducing horsepower. Everything has a shelf life and your car is no different. Once the parts reach the end of their shelf life, you can expect them to deteriorate slowly. This deterioration affects a number of other components as well.

When the engine begins to wear, maintaining compression becomes a challenge. The wear is usually found on cylinder walls and piston rings. The purpose of the rings is to prevent pressure from the fuel and air mixture from traveling along the cylinder walls. Due to wear, there are minuscule gaps formed, allowing the pressure to blow-by. Thus, the crank case is filled with contaminants and combustion byproducts. The result is a decrease in compression ratio and in turn, a decrease in horsepower.

Looking to buy used diesel trucks.

Many drivers are looking to buy used diesel trucks because of rising gas prices and the popularity of diesel-powered engines. Buyers have to be careful while buying second hand vehicles as these trucks aren’t necessarily in pristine condition. There are several things that a buyer must check before they buy the truck.

The first thing to check is the oil tank, if you see any white or milky substances it could indicate problems with the engine. Oil near the engine itself also indicates engine problems.

The exhaust pipe is also a good indicator of engine issues. Since diesel is heavier than gas, soot tends to collect at the end of the exhaust pipe. If you see too much soot collected, it’s time to look for other trucks. In cold weather, if starting the truck takes too long, then the glow plugs maybe malfunctioning. Glow plugs can be replaced but it will cost you. Exhaust smoke must be a light black color for a well running truck.

Looking inside the radiator, make sure there is no gunk in the liquid. The last test is the handling of the truck. Take the truck out for a drive and see if it handles alright. If not, you might want to check the transmission for issues. Excessive smoke, bad steering and unusual vibrations are also signs of transmission issues.

You can look at a large variety of diesel-powered trucks at Tims Truck Capital.

Continuing the list of pros and cons, let’s take a look at the main aspects – power and pollution. You can read about the fuel and maintenance aspects in the previous part.

Power

Diesel engines are popular in trucks for a reason, they produce great power. Diesel cars have more towing capabilities and can accelerate more rapidly so it is the obvious choice for those who use their trucks regularly. They offer steady and strong performances. Diesel engines also last longer.

On the down side, diesel trucks offer lesser horsepower so if you’re looking for speed, diesel engines are not your best choice.

Pollution

Diesel cars these days produce cleaner emissions than before. If you are concerned about the environment, diesel cars are the way to go. You can also use bio-diesel, but it may lead to decreased engine performance. The emissions from diesel vehicles are nowhere close to being as clean as those from hybrid or electric cars. Emissions contain carcinogens, nitrous oxide and soot. So diesel vehicles aren’t meant for everyday riding in the city.

Overall, diesel cars are great for open roads – they last longer, have more power and require less maintenance. If maintained well, diesel cars can save you a lot of money in the long run. Depending on the vehicle you buy, diesel engines might be your best option.

If you’re looking to buy a diesel truck, there are a lot of options. Before you decide which truck to buy, you have to be sure you want a diesel truck in the first place. To help you make the decision, here are a few pros and cons that apply for different areas.

Fuel

Diesel vehicles are mainly renowned for their fuel economy. Studies have shown that for trucks and SUVs with diesel-powered engines, mileage increases by up to 20% per gallon. The problem is, diesel trucks are better off on open roads. If you drive in heavy traffic, the increase in mileage is barely present. To add to this, not all stations have diesel fuel pumps so make sure your tank has enough fuel before you drive long distances. Diesel rates are also higher than petrol or gas. If you want to save fuel while driving in the city, you’re better off with a hybrid or electric truck.

Maintenance

Diesel engines have fewer parts and thus are relatively easy to maintain. These engines do not have spark plugs or distributors, so regular ignition tuneups are not needed. On the flip side, if you do not maintain the truck properly, there will be breakdowns that are expensive to get fixed.

We will take the debate further in the next part of the series. You can check out diesel trucks at Tim’s Truck Capital.

Manual Transmission Synchronizers.

Synchronizers are used by modern cars to bypass the requirement for double clutching. The synchronizer permits the gear and collar to synchronize speeds while they are in contact prior to the engagement of their dog teeth.

Car problems could be expensive and frustrating. Try to identify the problem on your own before you spend money and your time by going to a mechanic. You should employ certain signs and methods to figure out whether your car has damage like transmission fluid leak.

It is important to identify the smell and consistency of leaking fluid. The transmission fluid is slick liquid and oily to touch. It is similar to brake fluid or engine oil. The smell is similar to petroleum. If it smells burnt, then it is time to change the fluid.

You should identify the source of the leaking fluid. Transmission fluid generally leaks around middle and front of car. In case you discover puddles of slick and red liquid on the driveway where your car remains parked, there is a much greater chance of your car having transmission fluid leak.

Do pay attention to all the signs present in the car. In case the transmission is slow when it comes to starting the vehicle, then the transmission fluids can be deduced as low and there could be a leak. No start of transmission means absence of transmission fluid. Are you a car enthusiast? Then Nissan cars are the perfect answer. Drop in at Tim’s Truck Capital & Auto Sales Inc in Epsom, NH.

Car transmission system explaining synchronizers and fluid leaks.

The latest model cars use synchronizers so that they can bypass the requirement of double-clutching. The “synchro”- as the synchronizer is colloquially known, permits the gear and the collar to synchronize speeds. This happens while these two are already in touch, but prior to their respective dog teeth engaging. The synchro of each manufacturer is a little different compared to the others-but the fundamental idea remains constant. To give an example, cone of one gear will perfectly fit into the collar’s cone shaped depression. Collar and gear synchronize speeds due to friction that exists between collar and cone. The outer part of collar then moves out of way so the dog teeth can engage gear.

If a car develops problems, then it could be expensive and frustrating to repair. Prior to spending money and time at the mechanic, have a once over look at your car. See whether it is possible for you to identify the problem. You should preferably use certain signs and methods to find out whether the vehicle has transmission fluid leak.

It is important to find out color of leaking fluid. Red is the usual color of a transmission fluid leak. You should change the fluid if it is brownish. Do be aware that other car fluids like windshield wiper fluid and anti-freeze are also colored red. Differentiation between fluids can be achieved by smell and consistency. If you love driving, then you should buy from Tim’s. Come down to Tim’s Truck Capital & Auto Sales Inc in Epsom, NH to get the best deal in cars.

Manual transmission gears and synchronizer mechanism in a car.

Shifting the gears in any manual transmission car moves a rod which in turn moves a fork. The latter engages the gear. Different forks are assigned for different gears. The function of the fork is to move collar to desired gear. The dog teeth on collar mesh with the holes present in the gear. This action engages the latter. The reverse gear is engaged via a small and separate idle gear. Reverse gear always moves in the direction opposite to the forward gears.

Double clutch was common in the past. It was allowed to disengage any gear, and permit collar and also next gear to attain same speed. The new gear is then engaged. The shift is then double-clutched by pushing clutch pedal. This frees engine from transmission. The collar is then moved into neutral. The driver the releases the clutch and revs up the engine. This gets the latter to the correct RPM value for next gear. This is done to get collar and next gear to spin at same rate so that the dog teeth is allowed to engage gear. With the engine hitting the correct speed, the driver depresses clutch again. This locks collar into correct position on next gear.

Modern cars employ synchronizers so that they could avoid need for any double clutching. A “synchro” or synchronizer allows the gear and collar to synchronize speeds while they are in contact. However, this happens prior to the engagement of the dog teeth. For the best cars, drive to Tim’s Truck Capital & Auto Sales Inc in Epsom, NH.

Explanation of how to safely perform a three-point turn as an alternative to U-turns.

The below article is part 3 of a three-part series about making driving easy.

The three-point turn is a safer alternate to the 2 point turn and is easy to learn, but it has one more added step. It is called a three point turn because there are three positions that your car will reach before it completes the U turn.

The 3 point turn never cuts through a lane of traffic in reverse. So imagine the same intersection, but this time, instead of making a right turn, you go on to the east wing of the intersection and stop there, that is your first position. From there, you will be making a reverse turn to the right, turning into the south wing, but not cutting into traffic, so it is a relatively smooth turn, from there, you can simply drive on to the road, taking the left turn. It is easy, safe and can be mastered in the first try. There are a number of places where three point turns are the norm, so, we recommend this style of turning.

If you are on a narrow road without any intersections, but need to make a U turn, both methods will work just fine.

Grey Chevy Silverado EV truck.

Continued from part one of a 3-part series on driving.

The motive here is to make a complete U turn in the fastest way possible. We will be discussing both types of turns, the two point and the three point on a four cross junction. You will be driving down from the west toward the center and going back up after a left handed U turn.

The two-point turn has exactly two turns and two positions. First, you come in toward the intersection, put your right indicator on, make the right turn and once your entire vehicle has cleared the corner, that is position one. From there, you need to make a reverse while your left indicators are on. Back out into the road, through the intersection and onto the opposite side of the road, the east wing. By this time, you will be facing the road you came from, that is point number 2. From there it is a straight shot onto the road you just came through, a clean 2 point turn.

The thing about a 2-point turn is that you will be cutting through traffic in two places, hence higher the risk of a collision, so if there is a lot of traffic, you are better off with the 3 point turn.

Guide on safe U-turn alternatives using two-point and three-point turns for larger vehicles.

There are a number of things that every driver on the road should know how to do. Making U turns is one of them, but it is not always possible to make clean U turns, in fact, making full U turns is not advisable in many areas. If you are going to pick up a truck from Tim’s Truck Capital, then you are likely to be driving a slightly bigger than usual piece of machinery and it may not be possible to make a full U turn.

The best and safest way to make U turns is the 2 point and three point turns. They are designed to make it especially easy to turn right around and take the road back from where you came. It is a good skill to learn, more so if the size of your vehicle does not allow for flamboyant turns. Here are a few tips on making the perfect 2 point and 3 point turns.

Note that, it may not be allowed in some places to make 2 point turns, so make sure you are in the right when you are making these turns. Check with local law enforcement if needed.

The two-point turn

It is a basic U turn that involves you taking two turns, hence the name.

To be continued in part 2.
